Worship – July 19th – A Blended Mess

Welcome to Shepherd of the Hill’s online worship! We are thankful that you have come to this corner of the internet for some of God’s Word and time for reflection and worship. As you engage the below worship service, you are encouraged to quiet the world around you. Turn off or silence your phone. Find a quiet spot in your house or outdoors.

The service is approximately 30 minutes in length if you follow all the pieces. Songs have been contributed by our Worship Team and our traditional service pianist. Our lectors have recorded the readings. Pastor Adam has recorded a sermon for viewing. There is also liturgy (litanies, prayers, calls to worship) contained in the service. If you are worshiping with someone, please share the reading of these pieces with them.

Our kids’ bulletin, “The Sunday Paper,” can be found at the link below. It is based off of our Gospel reading for the week:

Confession – Based on Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43
Merciful God,you plant each of us like seeds in the same field and together we are nourished and nurtured by the sun.
We sway in the wind and are refreshed by the rain.
We are blessed by the knowledge that you want us to grow towards what you call us to be.

When we deprive others of that same opportunity,
forgive us.

When we want to uproot those whom we believe
do not belong in our part of the field,
forgive us.

When we label others as good or bad
rather than accept them for who they are,
forgive us.

When we are reluctant to acknowledge
that we ourselves are a mixture of weeds and wheat,
forgive us.

When we are afraid to look into the fields of our own lives
to see what is growing there,
forgive us.

O God, you know us inside and out, through and through.
You search us out and lay your hand upon us.

You know what we are going to say even before we speak.
So we pray that you will help us to reach out to
the uprooted and rejected,
the lonely and the outcast,
and to develop and grow the good in ourselves,
in others and in the world.
This we pray in Jesus’ name.

Questions for Reflection
Do you drink smoothies? Do you pollute them with green stuff?

How do you see evil and good blended in your own life and in the world around you?

Hearing God’s call to let them coexist, what is the Christian response to seeing evil?

Affirmation of Faith – Abundant God
Join together speaking the below words aloud. Know that, although we speak them in separate places and spaces, we all share the same words of affirmation this weekend.

We believe in the debonair God
who clothes the wild flowers
dressing them so superbly
that they outdo Solomon in all his glory;
who is the true Friend
of all creatures great and small.

We believe in the God of Christ Jesus
the Source of abundance,
full of grace and truth.

We believe in the extravagant God
who turns the other cheek,
goes the second mile,
turns water into the best wine,
brings healing with his every touch,
and who welcomes a woman’s of love
as she fills the house with unforgettable fragrance.

We believe in the faith-full God of Jesus Christ,
who sweated blood in an Olive Grove,
and kept the faith to the very end.

We believe in the redeeming God
who spared no cost,
forgave even his brutal crucifiers,
had time for a dying thief at his side,
and who on the third day
did a thing so prodigious
that even his friends were dismayed with joy.

We believe in the God of Jesus Christ,
the Source of abundance
wherever we turn
and no matter what we do.

Sending Song – How Great Is Our God
Performed by the SOTH Worship Team

Benediction – Based on Psalm 139:7-12
Wherever you go this week, know this:
God knows you better than you know yourself.
No matter where you go or what you do,
God is already there,
surrounding you with mercy
and guiding you with love.
So go with joy and confidence,
knowing that God goes with you.

Giving and Offering
Shepherd of the Hills is very blessed and grateful for your continued financial support during this difficult time of physical distancing required by the COVID-19 pandemic. Your giving allows us to continue to provide worship, support and outreach until it is safe to gather in person again. We realize that the pandemic has caused many financial challenges. As your finances allow, please consider continuing to support our shared ministries.

There are two ways to give:
– Mail your tithe or offering to the church office. The office will remain open for normal business hours.
– Give online! Our online giving is secure and fully operational. It can be found here.

Thank you again for helping us continue to spread God’s Word and help those in need during these challenging times.
